Folding-Arm Awnings

Shade on demand over a tasting table or dining terrace, gone again the moment the south-easter picks up — no posts, no permanent roof, no interrupted vineyard view.

01

Why estates want them

A folding-arm awning turns a baking north- or west-facing terrace back into a usable room for the middle of a summer's day — and retracts to let welcome winter sun through, an argument a fixed roof or pergola can't make. With no posts, there's no interrupted vineyard sightline and no clutter around a tasting table or braai area.

Projection runs to roughly 3–4m over wide spans, and solution-dyed acrylic fabric holds its colour under the region's sustained summer UV.

02

Motor and wind sensor is the responsible spec

The Cape south-easter builds through spring and summer and typically peaks around five in the afternoon — exactly when a terrace awning is most likely to be out. An awning caught open in a strong gust can be destroyed; a wind sensor retracts it automatically, before anyone needs to notice. We treat this as standard on every motorised awning we fit here, not an upsell.

03

Honest limitations

This is a shade product, not a rain product — fine at a pitch in light drizzle, never intended for standing water or a genuine storm. And the fixing substrate matters: brick, timber gable end and steel each take a different bracket, which is exactly what the in-home measure is for.

  • Full cassette for exposed positions, semi-cassette or open mounting elsewhere
  • Crank handle or motorised, with wind-sensor auto-retract available on every motorised unit
  • LED lighting and a vertical drop-valance available on premium lines

One honest limit

Wind ratings are real limits, not suggestions. On Banghoek's pass-funnelled positions and Bottelary's open farmland especially, we'll size and rate the unit for the actual exposure, not the average.
